There is information on Horatio P. Van Cleve's birth in Princeton, New Jersey, in 1809; his ancestry; his education at Princeton and West Point; his assignment to Fort Winnebago, Wisconsin, in 1831; the girlhood and education of Charlotte, daughter of Major Nathan Clark; Clark's assignment to Fort Winnebago; the courtship and marriage of Charlotte and Horatio; their travels after leaving military service in 1836 to various points in Ohio, Michigan, and Missouri; their removal to Long Prairie (Todd County, Minn.) in 1856; Van Cleve's Civil War service with the 2d Minnesota Infantry, and after the war as assessor of the Town of St. Anthony and as Minnesota adjutant general; and his death in 1891.

Horatio Phillips Van Cleve was born in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, on November 24, 1809, to John (1778-1826) and Louisa Anna (Houston) Van Cleve (1782-1827). He was educated in the Lawrenceville Academy and attended Princeton University for two years. He then entered West Point Military Academy, being graduated from there in 1831. He joined the United States Fifth Infantry Regiment as a Second Lieutenant, remaining with it for five years. He was posted to frontier duty at Fort Howard...
